The top of Temple I in Tikal, Guatemala, is visible above the forest canopy. When Mayans moved their people to the highlands 800 years ago, this city became overgrown and invisible. The old forest had been cleared to make a cityscape of towering temples, smooth white plaza pavements, wide walkways, and large water-storage reservoirs. Why did they leave the cities and where are they now?
